You Need to Stop SmokingThe British Heart Foundation Make Another Plea to Unhealthy Men
The British Heart Foundation's through another UK study show again that smokers' high blood pressure and raised cholesterol levels will shorten male lives by 10 years.
Smoking is still continually being cited as one of the main reasons behind early deaths and chronic illnesses later in life and yet there are still so many people who choose to smoke. Smoking Laws and Changes in Buenos AiresChanges to the smoking laws in Buenos Aires were eventually passed whereby smoking in public places is now not allowed, forcing the owners of restaurants to either provide a suitable smoking room (in-line with space specifications and more) or to take away those ashtrays. Restaurateurs and cafe owners in the Argentine capital have complained about losing business and how the government have not given them financial support to make these changes to their businesses. The general feeling in the city has been one of annoyance. People have been more interested in making smoking more accessible than they have been about their health, which is amazing considering the amount of worrying information which exists about this unhealthy habit. What has the British Heart Foundation Revealed About the Effects of Smoking? In 1967 - 1970, one particular study by The British Heart Foundation was set up in the UK and the results were published in The British Medical Journal. It followed more than 19,000 civil servants between the ages of 49 - 60 and tracked what gradually happened to them over the past 38 years. The results were..... stop smoking! At the beginning of the study, everybody involved in the research underwent a series of tests. They were measured, weighed, their blood pressure levels were read, lung capacity was checked, cholesterol and blood sugar levels were read and they all completed a questionnaire about their past medical history. One of the main foci for this medical history focused on smoking habits. 42% of the men were smokers and by 2005, The British Heart Foundation were able to reveal, 13,501 had died. Why are People Unable to Stop Smoking? Is it because smoking is still cool that we smoke so much? In some countries, smoking is regarded as being cool. Social smoking is a very popular custom all over the world. People often say that they do not smoke, but they enjoy the odd cigarette when drinking a beer on a night out with friends. They say that they like the way the drink and the cigarette taste together and that one without the other just isn't as good. Why are Men So Unhealthy and More Likely to Smoke? It's interesting that The British Heart Foundation's study decided to focus on men. The foundation has clearly stated that the same fears and worries about smoking and life expectancy do correlate and apply to the lives of women. However, the study was carried out on men because the 'pack culture' of British men (football and beer evenings with the boys, for instance) means that men are more inclined to smoke in social situations and that peer pressure amongst men is higher than amongst females. Women, by nature, are a little more independent and attempt things on their own more than is the case with men. This 'pack mentality' is another reason as to why men are more likely to smoke or find it difficult to quit smoking when socialising with their all-male friendship circles.
