There are many available options for treating gynecomastia, or male breasts including surgery and other treatment options.

Men who have excess tissue in the chest area that gives the appearance of breasts may be suffering from a condition called gynecomastia. The causes of gynecomastia include obesity, medications, illegal drug use, alcohol abuse, medical conditions and an imbalance in hormones. Treatments including breast reduction for men are available to decrease the prevalence of male breasts.

Weight Loss to Reduce Gynecomastia

Because male breasts are often caused by excess fatty tissue, losing weight will contribute to a reduction in symptoms of gynecomastia. Eat a diet low in saturated fat and processed foods, and consume more fruits and vegetables to reduce fat stores. Increase lean protein such as to further lower fat levels. Try to purchase meats that are raised without hormones.

Hormones and Male Breasts

Certain drugs used by many bodybuilders can lead to gynecomastia. In addition, thyroid imbalances that lead to a hormone imbalance can cause gynecomastia symptoms. If you are experiencing symptoms of the condition, contact your doctor to have your hormone levels tested.

Drugs and Gynecomastia

Street drugs such as amphetamines, heroin, marijuana and cocaine have been known to exacerbate symptoms of male breasts. Excess alcohol consumption can also aggravate the condition. In addition, some medications such as anti-depressants and some antibiotics are also often causes of gynecomastia.

Treatments for Gynecomastia

Topical ointments that contain dihydrotestosterone (DHT) can be applied to the chest area to reduce gynecomastia symptoms. Gels and ointments balance testosterone levels and reduce the appearance of male breasts. Andractim is a gel available by prescription for treatment of gynecomastia. Apply 3 times per day to reduce the appearance of male breasts.

Medical Conditions

Causes of gynecomastia often include certain medical conditions. Get tested for specific disorders that may lead to the condition. Both Gilberts and Klinefelters Syndrome can lead to symptoms of male breasts.

Exercise

Treatment for gynecomastia includes increasing exercise to lower overall body fat. Increase both aerobic and strength training exercises. Include 30 minutes 4 or more days weekly of both types of exercise. Do specific exercises for the chest such as chest presses, chest flies and pushups to increase underlying muscle and decrease the appearance of gynecomastia.

Consider Gynecomastia Surgery

Male breasts can often be reduced by removing fat and glandular tissue that contribute to enlarged breasts. Gynecomastia surgery is done under general anesthesia. It might take some time after gynecomastia surgery for full healing to occur. Gynecomastia surgery cost ranges from $2000 to $4500 and may depend on the severity of the condition.
